Veteran actor Suchitra Sen passes away in Kolkata

Legendary actress Suchitra Sen is no more. She breathed her last at a private nursing home in Kolkata this morning (17.01.2014). She suffered a massive heart attack last night. The 83 year old Suchitra Sen was admitted to the nursing home on 23rd of last month following complaints of respiratory tract infection. Suchitra began her career with the Bengali film "Shesh Kothai" in 1952.

Her acting in several Bengali films opposite Uttam Kumar took Bengali movies to a new high. She was the first Indian actress who was awarded at an international film festival. She bagged the best actress award for Saat Paake Bandha at the 1963 Moscow film festival. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 by the Government of India. In 2012, She was conferred West Bengal government's highest award Banga Bibhushan.

Suchitra Sen also acted in a number of Hindi movies which include Devdas opposite Dilip Kumar, Gulzar's famous film Aandhi where she starred opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Several film personalities have expressed their condolences over her death. Our correspondent reports that the death of Suchitra Sen is the end of an era in the Bengali film industry.

President and Prime Minister condoled the passing away of legendary actress Suchitra Sen today. The President Pranab Mukherjee in his message to Suchitra Sen's daughter Moon Moon Sen, said the Film industry has lost a highly talented and acclaimed actress.

Mr. Mukherjee also said the actress will always be remembered for her versatile acting which brought life into the characters she played.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in his condolence message hailed Sen as a graceful actor who carved a special niche in the hearts of milions of Indians through her cinematic presence. He said, Suchitra Sen was a versatile actor who marked a unique contribution to Indian cinema and to Bengali films in particular.

Sen was one of the first Indian artistes to win an international award at Moscow in 1963.
