Noted journalist and writer Khushwant Singh died
Noted writer and journalist Khushwant Singh passed away on Thursday. He
was 99.
Singh was best known for his trenchant secularism, his humour, and an abiding love for poetry.
Born on 2 February in
1915, Singh was best known for his trenchant secularism, his humor, and an
abiding love of poetry. His comparisons of social and behavioral
characteristics of Westerners and Indians are laced with acid wit. Singh
started his illustrious career after joining All India Radio in 1951 as a
journalist. He was founder editor of Yojana from 1951- 1953. He also served as
editor of several literary and news magazines, as well as two broad sheet
newspapers, through the 1970s and 1980s. Singh also worked with The Illustrated
Weekly of India, a news weekly; and two major Indian newspapers, The National
Herald and the Hindustan Times. From 1980 through 1986, Singh was a member of
Rajya Sabha. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 for service to the
country. In 1984, he returned the award in protest against the siege of the
Golden Temple by the Indian Army. In 2007, the Indian government awarded
Khushwant Singh the Padma Vibhushan. .
