Agriculture notes prepared by IAS Topper for all agriculture based competitive exams-Agronomy-Limitations in fodder crop cultivation

Limitations in fodder crop cultivation

  • Fodder crops are neglected due to
    • Increasing population put more pressure on food grains, therefore, farers divert their most of their energy in satisfying his domestic needs. Thus the fodder crops are given the stepmother treatment
    • Green revolution mainly included the grain crops like rice, wheat, maize etc, thus fodder crops were side tracked. Lack of attention to fodder crop due to lack of research and development also resulted in poor varieties of fodder crops
  • Socio-economic factors:
    • It is customary for the people of India that they preferred to graze them rather than applying
    • Most of the farmers are not aware of silage making, haymaking and other methods to preserve and improve the nutrient contents of fodder
  • Livestock: low productivity of most of the Indian cattle breeds discourage the farmers to go for improved fodder because of higher cost involved in it.
  • Other problems: Lack of research, improved seeds and government support

Remedies:
  • Increase in fodder cropped area by bringing wastelands, denuded forest lands and other marginal lands under fodder
  • Promoting mixed and intercropping (legume fodder) with grain crops
  • Adoption of Agri-Silvi-Pasture, Silvi-Pasture, Agroforestry and Social Forestry
  • Evolution of high yielding varieties, production of high quality seeds and popularization of fodder crops in rainfed areas
