Agriculture notes prepared by IAS Topper for all agriculture based competitive exams-Agronomy-Limitations in oil seed production

Limitations in oil seed production

·        Most of the oil seed crops are grown as mixed crop or intercrop with other crops without giving due consideration to the compatibility.

  • Marketing of oilseeds are largely unregulated resulting in huge fluctuation in the market price. These uncertainties discourage the farmers to take up oilseed cultivation

  • Genetic handicapedness: Oil seeds store fats and oils as their reserve foods. They need more energy than carbohydrate and protein because the calorific value of fats is higher than other. Therefore, oil seeds require better imports and proper agronomic management for better yield

In addition to these, all other reasons mentioned for the limitation in pulse cultivation also applies to oil seeds.
